Who we are

Problem Statement

New York needs to build or unlock over 800,000 more homes in the next decade to meet current demand and future growth projections. This is critical not only for maintaining our state’s strong economic growth, but also for tackling pervasive residential segregation, preventing displacement, reducing housing cost burdens and improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers who want to stay here. New York needs to take an all of the above approach when it comes to creating safe and affordable homes for all, but core to the solution is a need to significantly increase our housing stock of all types.

Mission

To develop, inform and support equitable housing supply policies across New York State.

Vision

Our vision is to serve as an umbrella group lifting up the voices of communities, advocates and policy makers across New York who are working to address our critical housing supply challenges.

Principles

• Stable and affordable housing benefits all New Yorkers, and every community has a role to play
• A statewide framework is critical to meaningfully and equitably address our housing supply needs
• We must prioritize sustainable development to achieve our climate goals and promote the wellbeing of New Yorkers
• Abuse of regulatory procedures must stop and we should streamline sound development
• We must protect vulnerable New Yorkers by implementing measures to prevent displacement
• We must reduce housing cost burdens and make housing across the state more affordable

Part of the Solution

Allowing and encouraging more homes in our state and more housing options for people of all incomes and stages of life will strengthen the state’s economy and help all New Yorkers. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, we weren’t creating enough new homes to accommodate job growth and a growing population. And the fallout from the pandemic is pushing us toward a new wave of homelessness and foreclosures. Now more than ever, New York needs more housing and especially more affordable housing, to maintain and grow our economy.
